If you have walked through Kathmandu, you have seen momo stalls on every corner. Momo are Nepal’s most loved street food, and they are one of the first things we recommend to new guests at Avatar.
What are momo?
Momo are hand-folded dumplings, usually filled with spiced minced chicken or vegetables. The filling is seasoned with ginger, garlic, onion, coriander and Nepalese spices, then the dumplings are steamed or fried. They are served with a tangy tomato-based chutney, called achar.
How are momo different from Chinese dumplings or gyoza?
- Spicing: momo fillings are more heavily spiced, with ginger, garlic and Himalayan flavours
- The sauce: instead of soy and vinegar, momo come with a tomato and sesame chutney
- The shape: momo are usually pleated into a round purse or half-moon
- Ways to eat them: steamed, fried, in a spiced soup (jhol) or tossed in chilli sauce
Steamed, fried or chilli?
Steamed momo are the classic and the best way to taste the filling. Chilli momo, which are fried then tossed Indo-Chinese style with chilli, capsicum and onion, are the crowd favourite for anyone who likes a bit of heat.
How many should you order?
A plate works well as an entree for two, or as a light meal for one. Pair them with a curry and rice for a full Nepalese-Indian feast.
